How much does it cost to build a marketplace app?
A marketplace has two kinds of users and money moving between them, which is why it costs more than a plain web app. A narrowed first version reads as $6,500 to $9,000 in my scope estimator. A full two-sided marketplace is outside a Launch Sprint, so it is scoped before it is priced. These are estimates, not quotes.
Cost ranges (estimates)
- Narrowed first version$6,500 to $9,000About 4 to 5 weeks
Buyer and seller roles, one category, one payment integration. The scope confirms it fits one sprint.
- Full two-sided buildScope firstMore than one sprint
Self-serve seller onboarding, payouts, disputes, and messaging. Outside Launch Sprint terms.
- Scope & Prototype$500Before the build
A one-page written scope, a fixed price, and a core-flow prototype, credited within 30 days.
Prices are USD estimates, not quotes. They come from the bands in my MVP Scope Estimator and the offers on /hire. A short written scope sets the fixed price.
What these ranges assume
- A web app, not native mobile.
- Three roles: buyer, seller, and admin.
- Two or three workflows, like listing and buying.
- One payment integration, standard customer data.
- A public launch, built by me alone.
- A fixed price, written down before work starts.
What drives the cost
- Automatic seller payouts beyond basic checkout
- Four or more workflows, like reviews or disputes
- Identity checks or regulated payment steps
- Live updates, queues, and retries at launch
- A native mobile app on top of the web app
- Several categories with different listing rules
- One category and one city or niche
- Onboarding the first sellers yourself
- One checkout, sellers paid outside the app
- A private beta with a small group first
- Reviews, messaging, and disputes in sprint two
- An admin who runs early orders by hand
How long it takes
- Narrowed first version: about 4 to 5 weeks.
- Full marketplace: sprints set in the scope.
- A written update daily, a live link in week one.

I have no sourced market averages for these, so I describe fit and risks instead of quoting prices I cannot back up.
For marketplaces, hosted marketplace platforms are worth checking first if your model fits their template.

Questions
How much does a marketplace app cost?
A narrowed first version, with buyers, sellers, one category and one payment integration, reads as $6,500 to $9,000 over about 4 to 5 weeks in my scope estimator. A full two-sided marketplace with seller payouts and disputes is outside a Launch Sprint and is scoped first.
Why is a marketplace scoped first?
A Launch Sprint covers up to 3 core flows, sign-in, a database, and one payment integration or outside service. A full marketplace adds a second user type with its own onboarding, payouts, and trust features. My sprint terms list two-sided marketplaces as out of scope for that reason.
What does the narrowed version skip?
Typically self-serve seller onboarding, automatic payouts, reviews, messaging, and disputes. You or an admin handle those by hand while you learn whether buyers and sellers show up. The written scope lists what is in and what is out.
Where should I start?
With Scope & Prototype at $500. You get a one-page scope that names the exclusions, a fixed price, and a first prototype of the core flow. The $500 is credited to the build if you go ahead within 30 days.
Do payment fees come on top?
Yes. Payment providers charge their own fees, billed to your account. The build price covers the work of building and launching the app.
Is this page a quote?
No. It is a range from the same rules the scope estimator uses. A short written scope sets the fixed price, and you get one within 48 hours of sending a brief.
